HP PCs - Blocking pop-up windows or advertisements

This document pertains to HP computers with Microsoft Windows.

When surfing the Web you may encounter pop-up advertisements that can become distracting or annoying. There are a few things that you can do to eliminate pop-up advertisements.

What are pop-up windows and how do you block them?

A pop-up is a small web browser window that appears on top of the website you're viewing. Pop-up windows often open as soon as you visit a website and are usually created by advertisers. Web browsers have features called pop-up blockers that can prevent pop-up windows from appearing. In most pop-up blocker programs you may choose the level of filtering you want, select which pop-ups you want displayed and build a blacklist of those you do not. Some programs allow you to import blacklists from other users. The strongest filters block additional forms of web advertising, such as banner ads, and offer protection from intrusive spyware downloads used to track website visitors. Extensive filtering can slow down your browsing.

Safely close a pop-up window

To close a popup window in your web browser, click the large X in the upper right hand corner of the window. Do NOT select OK , Ignore or Close buttons within the advertisement, because you have no idea what action is performed behind the button.

If there is no X on the pop-up or browser window, press the Alt+F4 keys to close the window.

Block pop-ups in Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge browser has functionality built-in to disable pop-up windows that could appear while browsing the Internet. Edge browser does not currently allow extensions.

  1. Click the More actions icon () in the upper right corner, then select Settings.

  2. Select View advanced settings.

  3. Slide Block pop-ups to On.

Block pop-ups in Internet Explorer

Pop-up Blocker is a feature in Internet Explorer that lets you limit or block most pop-ups. You can choose the level of blocking you prefer, from blocking all pop-up windows to allowing the pop-ups that you want to see.

When Pop-up Blocker is turned on, the information bar displays a message saying "Pop-up blocked. To see this pop-up or additional options click here."

note:

Internet Explorer allows pop-up blocker add-ons as well as built-in features.

  1. In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button and then click Internet options.

  2. On the Privacy tab, under Pop-up Blocker, select the Turn on Pop-up Blocker check box, and then click OK.

note:

You can allow a pop-up to be displayed by pressing CTRL+ALT as you click a link to open a website that has pop-ups.

Block pop-up windows in Chrome or Firefox

In Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers you can install extensions or add-ons such as AdBlockPlus that offer pop-up blocking features. Some Internet Service Providers (ISP) may also provide software that can be used to disable pop-up windows. Check with your ISP regarding availability.

Common questions about pop-ups

I turned on pop-up blocker but I still see some pop-ups. Why?

You might have software, such as adware or spyware, on your computer that is opening pop-up windows. To stop these pop-ups, you will have to identify the software that is opening them and then remove it or change its settings to stop it from opening pop-up windows. For information about detecting and removing adware and spyware, see Computer Might Be Infected by a Virus or Malware (Windows 10, 8) .

Can I choose to allow pop-ups from a specific website in Internet Explorer?

If you want to allow a specific website to display automatic pop-ups, follow these steps:

  1. In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button and then click Internet options.

  2. On the Privacy tab, click Pop-up Blocker Settings.

  4. Repeat the previous step for every website you want to allow pop-ups from. When you are finished adding websites, click Close.

Some windows with active content are not blocked in Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer will not block pop-ups from websites that are in the Local intranet zone. If you want the pop-ups from these websites to be blocked, you have to remove the websites from this zone. For more information, see the Microsoft page Change security and privacy settings for Internet Explorer (in English).

Can I set Internet Explorer to block all pop-ups?

If you want to block all pop-ups in Internet Explorer follow these steps:

  1. In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button and then click Internet options.
